D2 : The Mighty Ducks (1994). "Hey, Goldberg! I bet if that puck was a cheeseburger, you'd stop it"

This week we take on the many faces and hairstyles of Emilio Estevez as he takes on Iceland and himself...

Storyline :Gordon Bombay is forced to withdraw from the minor hockey league with a knee injury. Much to his surprise, he is given the job of coach of Team USA Hockey for the Junior Goodwill Games in California. With most of the Ducks and a few new players in tow, he sets forth for LA. All appears to be going well for a while, but the hype of Hollywood starts to get to Gordon, and he is distracted when Iceland, the favourites to win the title, appear on the scene.

This movie is an ode to the worst songs an early 90s movie can possibly have.

The Puck Stops Here! But the fun facts sure don't.

  1. The Ducks who appeared in the first film but did not return for this one are: Dave Karp (Aaron Schwartz), Peter Mark (J.D. Daniels), Terry Hall (Jussie Smollett), Tammy Duncan (Jane Plank), and Tommy Duncan (Danny Tamberelli).

  2. The scene after the first game with Iceland where Coach Bombay makes the team do sprints is based on Herb Brooks' 1980 US Olympic team when they tied the Norwegian national team in an exhibition game. The team skated for about an hour even though the rink manager had turned the lights off.

  3. Maria Ellingsen, the actress who plays the Iceland trainer, was in fact born in Reykjavík, Iceland and taught the actors playing the Icelandic hockey team how to speak her native tongue.

  4. Marc Maron filmed a cameo as an angry valet who the Ducks come across in Beverly Hills but his scenes were deleted.

  5. Scott Whyte, who plays Gunnar Stahl in this movie, makes an appearance in D3 as well. This time as "Scooter" the seemingly non-Icelandic goalie of the varsity team. In both films though, he clearly carries a torch for Julie Gaffney, the Ducks female goaltender.
